A CLASSIC KIWI STAYER

Norwoods, a 2yo colt with Tom Dabernig at Warrnambool, spent his formative years in the lush surrounds of one of New Zealand’s leading thoroughbred nurseries, Rich Hill Stud. Middle-distance and staying stars such as Prince of Penzance, Xtravagant and Mufhasa have previously strolled these pastures. On his development and early education to date, we have high hopes that Norwoods can well utilise his classic NZ upbringing to become a successful racehorse in Australia.Your chance to own and race a quality filly by Champion sire So You Think – the sire of no less than 80 Stakes horses.

THE HORSE

Norwoods is a 2yo colt who ticks all the boxes of the quintessential New Zealand stayer. He presents as an athletic, clean winded specimen with an economical action and high lung capacity. Norwoods is well-balanced and correct, and his trainer Tom Dabernig constantly refers to the horse’s efficient action and ability to cover the ground – two key traits of any successful stayer.

BREEDING

OTI raced Wee Gilly, the dam of Norwoods. Wee Gilly (by Roc de Cambes) was stakes placed and a city winner who handled all conditions and had a great will to win. A touch unfulfilled on the racetrack, we gave Wee Gilly her chance as a broodmare and sent her back to New Zealand for a mating to Vadamos.

Selected by OTI as the ideal mate for Wee Gilly, the progeny of Vadamos have made an immediate impact in Australia and New Zealand. Most notably, he is the sire of Group 1 winning sensation La Crique, who won the Arrowfield Stud Plate by almost four lengths. He has sired over 30 winners this season and is quickly building a reputation as one of the most exciting stallions in New Zealand. Vadamos was a champion French 1600/2000 horse, winning the prestigious Group 1 WFA Prix Du Moulin. In a rare feat, he also managed to win stakes races at three, four and five from a mile up to 2400m.

THE PLAN

With two educational preparations behind him, Norwoods has been in work with Tom Dabernig at Warrnambool since early February. He has completed the preliminary stages of his preparation and is impressing the team in his track gallops. A jumpout is not far away, and we expect to see him there in the next fortnight. Norwoods looks to have all the hallmarks of a classic stayer who will appreciate getting out over a mile and beyond. He will potentially get to the races at the back end of his 2yo season, however we expect him to blossom as a 3yo and improve again into his four-year-old season. His future is bright.

THE COST

With insurance paid to July 31, 2024 and all other costs covered to August 31, 2023, a 10% interest in
Norwoods will cost $17,100 plus GST. 5% therefore would be $8,550 plus GST.
